Can you think outside of the box while you are constantly being pushed in it? Can you be both creative and innovative when you have to follow strict rules and structures?
I'm sure this is the dilemma for most of the people working in advertising. In order to launch successful AND on-time campaigns, you need to be on top of every single process (briefing, planning, targeting, billing, execution, reporting, etc.) and at the same time, you need to find the best and most creative ways to get your target audience's attention based on the product or service that you are promoting.
Usually, there are dedicated teams that take care of each of those steps, but as a manager, you have to be involved in each and every step on the way. It's very important to keep a healthy balance between the administrative and creative tasks because if that scale is tilted to one side more than it should, it's not very likely that you'll get the results that you expected from your campaigns.
As we all know, creativity needs time and freedom, it doesn't really get along with the pressure of time sensitivity and rigid processes. But in fast-paced industries, often times everything is needed “yesterday”. The important thing is finding the balance between discipline/structure vs the peace of mind for creativity.
Marketers and managers out there, what do you usually do in order to be creative and structured at the same time? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
